Seven years ago I was training for a marathon, my first, I was dedicated and both nervous and excited to take part in the event. Training started well, then it started to get harder, I was struggling and started to find running harder than when I first started… it turned out I was pregnant and my hormones were against me running. It also turned out I would be over 7 months pregnant by the date of the race and if I was finding things hard now I was advised it wasn’t wise to push on through.
I deferred my race place for the following year in the naive hope that I would be race ready by then. Skip forward to the birth of my first son, I couldn’t wait to get back started, I felt great (well maybe not great, lack of sleep and the constant demands from a tiny human definitely stopped that), but I truly thought I was in good shape and would have no trouble. I was advisor to leave running until 5-6 months by my pre and postnatal Pilates instructor and I amazingly listened.
The came the day of that first run, I did not go well, I didn’t even get half a kilometre and I was (uncontrollably) wet myself. I was mortified. I tried a few more times (those times on the treadmill in the safely of my own home) and the same happened. I sort help with a female physio who confirmed I had a minor prolapse and a hypertonic pelvic floor. I was sent away with homework to complete. I remember thinking I was ready a few months on a entering a 10k race only to get less than 1km in and leaking, it was mortifying, I was there on my own and have to drive the hour home in tears. I thought I’d never run again.
I left things for some time, doing my exercises but not really running at all and then after the birth of my second son I was seen and informed I had a second prolapse. Both were minor and I was luck in the fact that they didn’t get in the way of my every day life in general, it was always just exercise, which for me was my everyday life. I realised Kegels alone were not getting me anywhere. I ended up leaving my job as a personal assistant and retraining as a personal trainer specialising in pre and postnatal and body recovery.
I knew I not only wanted to recover my body to the best of my ability I wanted to help others going
through the same things and so Bee MumFit was born. It’s been a long journey for me, with two small children and running my own business, starting it from scratch, has left only small amounts of time for my own recovery. However, after many set backs from coughs and colds (a massive pelvic floor aggregator) and with the support of my friends, family and clients on Sunday 28 th January 2024 I ran and completed the Chepstow 10k, not only beating my post babies PB by 6 minutes but also not a drop leaked!
I know this might feel like over sharing for some, but it is so important for others to know its not OK
to be leaking when you run (or doing any other activity or day to day task), and it is for the majority
something that can be healed, with hard work and dedication (it’s life long care) you really can start
going back to the things you love.

I am 59 years old and only started running about three years ago. My motivation came from the need to get fit, but also to manage my mental health around a very busy job and significant caring responsibilities.
Subsequently, my father and step mother have both passed away this year. Running has been a crutch that I have leaned on to get me through some tough times.
I did my first marathon, the Rob Burrow Leeds marathon in May 2023 in honour of my father but also to raise money for the MND Association, as it is a great cause and has also touched the lives of friends. Amazingly I did a time of 3 hours 47 minutes. This was a very special day with incredible support.
I also did the Leeds Rob Burrow marathon with my 2 brothers in honour of my Dad after he passed away. It was a first marathon for all 3 of us and brutally tough!
I decided to run the RunThrough Oulton Park race on 26 November 2023 to give me a renewed focus to my nightly and weekend training runs following by the sudden passing of my step mother. Training has been tough, but without fail I always feel better after a run.
The course was really tough and it was a cold day but I was astounded to achieve a time of 3 hours and 41 minutes, much quicker than my training runs. A great event that really tested physical and mental resilience during the 10 laps.
Unfortunately, the car journey home was less rewarding when I was stranded in a lay-by for 3 hours in the freezing cold waiting for roadside assistance when my car battery failed. However, this trauma did not detract in any way from the pride and buzz I got from completing the marathon and the time I managed.
I also ran a 10k with my best friend’s 16 year old daughter, Poppy Jones in Caernarfon which was an amazing experience to share her joy at breaking 50 minutes. Planning to run with her on her first Half Marathon when she is old enough.
Next stop is the Manchester Marathon in April 2024 with some shorter races and daily training in between!
After all three of us (me and my 2 brothers) saying never again… We have all got into the Chicago Marathon in October this year. A great way of getting together as one brother lives abroad. Running has really strengthened our bond as brothers, which has really helped in tough times.
Thanks for organising the RunThrough race.

I am part of the communications team answering lovely runner’s emails and making sure all their questions are answered and problems are solved. You will have seen my face working for Runthrough for over 3 years at events but most recently I have been working behind the scenes!
My proudest running achievement is when I completed all three Spartan Obstacle Races completing the Trifecta and when I completed the Three Peaks Challenge in just over 24 hours.
My next big goal is to hike around Scotland in the new year.
My advice for anyone getting into running is to remember to enjoy the little things on your run, for example I like to count the dogs I see while running in the park! I find it really helps!

I first started running towards the end of 2019. Up until that point, I had endured an unforgiving battle with an eating disorder – having left university at the age of 19 after being diagnosed with anorexia. I needed something to channel my negative thoughts into, and running soon provided that outlet.
My first run was neither successful nor fun – I took to the treadmill in loose-fitting loungewear and had no real concept of proper running form. Within 10 minutes of gentle jogging in the confines of my parents’ barn, sweat was collecting on my forehead and my breathing was heavy with unfamiliar exertion. Despite the discomfort that came with that first run, there was something about the sense of achievement that came with pushing myself that motivated me to carry on.
Within 4 months of gradual endurance building, I had signed up to my first 10K race in Manchester. Within the 2 months that followed, I was signed up to run my first half marathon. The training was by no means easy, but the physical pain of those early runs far outweighed the mental pain of an eating disorder. As my determination to outperform each new run grew, so did my want to want to fuel better for success.
Today, running is more to me than I could possibly ever have imagined when I first set foot on a treadmill 4 years ago. It is the reason I gladly set my alarm for 5:30 wake ups on a week day before work. It is the serenity of getting outdoors and logging miles before the world has woken up. It’s the sense of community, new friends, and the anticipation of RunThrough race weekends. In many ways, running it was has saved me from the all encompassing darkness of a mental illness.
Many thanks,
Cara

Local businessman, Scott Wrigley decided to take on a huge challenge this year, to complete 20 epic events to raise money for local charity, the Children’s Bereavement Centre. The Children’s Bereavement Centre helps children and young people cope with the grieving process brought on by the death or terminal illness diagnosis of someone close to them.
Scott, owner, of Wrigleprint Personalised Merchandise in Newark, began his challenge on Sunday, February 12th Holme Pierrepoint where he took part in his first half marathon.
Since then, he has clocked up over 1000 miles in events, not including his training runs. His challenge included 8 half marathons, two 50K ultras, and a 70 mile, 24 hour equinox. The longest and one of the most challenging of his challenges was The Wall in the Summer, 115km run from Carlisle to Newcastle, known as the UK’s most iconic ultra-marathon, where runners conquer 70 stunning miles through historic Hadrian’s Wall.
Scott talked about this event,
“The Wall was one of the hardest things I’ve done so far. This was the one out of all my #cbc20420 epic challenges I was looking forward to the most (12/20) Got harder at around 25 miles as we left the Wall Town pit stop. Undulating ground big hill after big ass hill, with beautiful scenery! My main aim was to reach Hexham – 44 miles, I knew mentally as soon as I’d reached it I would be home and dry. – what’s another marathon when you’ve just done 44 miles?
For me the one I dug deep for was the last 5 miles, it went on forever, and ever, the further we got we still didn’t see the Millennium bridge. An extra surge of energy came when going past Newcastle Quayside, people cheering and clapping us on. Throughout the whole ultra the pitstops where the best ever! So many unofficial extra ones on the route also, really friendly people offering food drinks etc etc. As ever a great run community and great event organised by Rat Race HQ.
Was elated to finish and cross that bridge to achieve ‘legendary status.’”
Scott’s final Half Marathon on December the 2nd at Carsington Water.
Scott decided that he wanted to take his CBC 20 4 20 challenge of completing 20 events for a couple of reasons. It is 20 years ago since this first marathon, it is the Children’s Bereavement Centre 20th anniversary this year and because Scott experienced loss as a child and knows how important our service is to bereaved families.
The charity has been supported by Scott and his business, Wrigleprint over the years and now has a fundraising target of £20,000 that he would like to raise for the charity.
Taking part in these physically and mentally challenging events was always a private challenge for Scott, it was never his intention to raise money or tell people about it, but then he thought he could raise vital funds for the Children’s Bereavement Centre.
Scott says:
“Originally, I was just looking to take part in challenge events, but then I thought this was a great opportunity to raise money for a local charity at the same time. The Children’s Bereavement Centre is a unique and special place where children aged between 3 and 18 and their families who are affected by terminal illness or death of someone close can access the support and guidance they need, and if I can reach my target of £20,000 than this for me will be an extreme personal and fulfilling achievement. You can follow my journey on my Instagram and facebook page called fortysomethingrunner where I have been sharing my training. If you can give anything however small, you will be helping a fantastic cause.”
For the past few years Scott has been producing branded hoodies and t-shirts with the Children’s Bereavement Centre logo on for local fundraisers and for local businesses. He has designed and printed his own branded running shirts that he has worn to help raise awareness of his events and the charity.
Scott hopes to raise £20,000 for the charity, so far he’s £6,000. Please support Scott by sponsoring him by visiting –

From a swimming background, Chloe Dooley only discovered triathlon two and a half years ago when she entered and won her first event. Since then she has gone from strength to strength, she is the British Aquathlon champion and this year decided to close her season by toeing the line at Ironman Barcalona 70.3. Going into the event Chloe would have been ecstatic with a top age group finish, but 5K into the run took first place and held on to win her first Ironman Middle distance event. Certainly a name to watch out for in the future.
