What is best – gels or whole foods?️
Ultimately, it is down to personal preference however there are a few things to take into account…
Gels can be quick & convenient on the go but can be more expensive than whole foods. You also know exactly what you are putting into your body with whole foods.
One gel contains ~25-30g of carbohydrates, you can also get this from:
-1 large banana
-5 dates
-5 dried apricots
-40g of sweets such as jelly babies/haribo
-2 slices of soreen
Things you do need to account for within this:
Try out the foods during training sessions before races
Some foods & gels inhibit fluid absorption so you may need to think about an increased fluid intake
Amounts may need adjusting according to training demands
If combined with fats/protein this may slow down carbohydrate absorption

Ultimately it is your own choice and it is always about what works best for you. You can even mix and match between them.
