At RunThrough, we’re constantly inspired by the stories of runners who embody resilience, determination, and the power of community. Today, we’re honoured to share the incredible journey of Shakil, a Primary PE teacher and Sports Coach, who overcame unimaginable challenges to complete the London Marathon—just months after regaining the ability to walk.
A Sudden Turn of Events
In August 2023, Shakil was enjoying a summer holiday when life took a dramatic and unexpected turn. What began as a minor headache quickly escalated into a severe condition that led to a loss of speech and paralysis. Despite numerous tests, doctors were unable to determine the cause of Shakil’s sudden paralysis. The once active and vibrant PE teacher found themselves hospitalised, unable to perform even the most basic tasks.
“I couldn’t do anything, not even go to the toilet,” Shakil recalls. The situation was dire, but amid the uncertainty and fear, Shakil found strength in the unwavering support of their brother Hasan and close friends Carla and Jojo. Jojo, a season ticket holder for RunThrough, played a crucial role in keeping Shakil’s spirits up, alongside the broader running community that rallied around them during this difficult time.
The Road to Recovery
By late August, Shakil was discharged from the hospital, but the road to recovery was long and challenging. Initially relying on a walking frame, Shakil began in-home physiotherapy to regain strength. A 10k race marked a pivotal moment in Shakil’s journey—this was their first race since the illness and the first time walking unaided. Supported by friends Andy and Nayla, Shakil completed the race, signalling the start of an incredible comeback.
“My first pacing event post-illness was with RunThrough at Battersea Park,” Shakil shares. “I was still weak, but the running community, including Tracksmith and groups like Muslim Runners, Outrunners, and Black Girls Do Run UK, have been instrumental in my recovery. They helped me kickstart my runs again, and I can’t thank each and every one of them enough.”
The support from these groups was not just physical but also emotional, providing Shakil with the encouragement and motivation needed to keep moving forward. Each step was a victory, each run a testament to Shakil’s determination and the strength of the community that stood by them.
A Marathon Achievement
Just months after regaining the ability to walk, Shakil achieved something truly extraordinary—completing the London Marathon. This achievement was more than just a race; it was a powerful statement of resilience, proving that with determination and support, anything is possible.
“Mentally and physically, this journey has been tough, but we keep moving and improving,” Shakil reflects. “Just remember, nothing is impossible in life. Put your mind to it, and you will achieve anything, just like what I am trying to do.”
Looking Ahead
Shakil’s journey is far from over. They continue to recover, and their commitment to running and pacing with RunThrough remains as strong as ever. Shakil’s story is a powerful reminder of the strength that lies within each of us, and the incredible impact that a supportive community can have in overcoming life’s toughest challenges.
At RunThrough, we are incredibly proud to have Shakil as part of our community. Shakil’s journey from paralysis to completing a marathon is an inspiration to us all, showing that no matter the obstacles, with perseverance and support, we can achieve great things.
As Shakil continues their recovery and returns to the sport they love, we’ll be cheering them on every step of the way.
