This September, Team Katya—a group formed in memory of Katya Batchelor, who tragically passed from bowel cancer in June—will take on the Run Kent Tonbridge Half Marathon. Katya’s sudden passing, just two months after her diagnosis at age 49, left a deep impact on her family. Led by her husband Duncan and daughters Anna and Sasha, the team has already raised over £100,000 for Cancer Research UK.

The journey for Team Katya isn’t about personal bests or race times, but rather about coming together in the wake of a devastating loss. Duncan, Anna, and Sasha are running in Katya’s honour, hoping to make a difference for others who face the same battle. The family shared,  “What matters is not the half marathon, or any particular athletic challenge or event. What matters is how well we can all contribute to raise money for Cancer Research to help other people, and to save others from this disease”

Since forming, Team Katya has been overwhelmed by the support they’ve received from friends, family, and the wider community. Their fundraising has surpassed expectations, and their mission continues to grow. As they approach race day, they aim to increase awareness and raise even more funds for Cancer Research UK, hoping that no family will have to endure the same pain of losing a loved one so suddenly.

Matt Wood, Co-Founder of RunThrough, expressed his admiration for the Batchelor family’s efforts, saying, “We are honoured to see our events used for such meaningful causes. Team Katya is a testament to the power of running to bring people together, not just for fitness but for a higher purpose. Their commitment to helping others is truly inspiring.”

For Team Katya, running the Run Kent Tonbridge Half Marathon is more than just an athletic challenge; it’s a tribute to Katya’s life and a chance to create real change. They continue to encourage donations and hope to see even more people get involved. Every pound raised goes directly to Cancer Research UK, supporting critical studies and treatments that can save lives.
