Carbohydrates are essential, especially for long runs! It is well known that ingestion of carbohydrate enhances performance and delays fatigue. This is due to it helping to maintain plasma glucose concentration and high rates of carbohydrate oxidation.Carbohydrates have a limited capacity of how much of a single form they can absorb at a time (around 60g\/hour max). Therefore, to consume carbs above this threshold, we need to use a combination of carbohydrates (glucose\/fructose\/fructose\/maltose etc). This is due to them using different transport systems. Taking this in mind, the 4 tips above should be used as a basis when looking to take on carbohydrates during exercise.
